“You look good on that horse, sugar.” I smiled up at Penny from her seat atop Skye. She was all joy from head to toe today, and I loved seeing her so happy.

“Wanna come on a ride with us?” she asked.

I glanced behind me at the ranch hands who were just finishing up for the day. I still had a couple bales of hay to load, but other than that, I was done too. The cameras were still rolling, and my girl…no, Penny, was putting on a show, no doubt.

“Sure. Let me finish this up, and I’ll come find you.”

Tristan rode toward us on Wildfire, but that damn horse had still not gotten the message that being a good citizen meant always following commands, not just sometimes. The horse reared, and my brother had to work to keep himself in the saddle. “Whoa, boy. Settle down.” He managed to get Wildfire under control, but dammit, my heart was racing. What if something had happened and Skye had spooked? Penny could’ve been hurt.

“Get that horse out of here, Tristan. He’s not ready to be around everyone else.”

Tristan eyed Penny. “You okay?”

She nodded and smiled at him, making my blood boil. “Yeah, thanks. Skye is pretty steady. Not much bothers him.”

“You’ve got good control over him too.”

“He’s a good boy.”

My brother didn’t even spare me a glance as he took in Penny in her tight white T-shirt and fitted jeans. He liked what he saw. I knew that look in his eyes. “You goin’ for a ride or coming back?”

I cleared my throat. “She’s going with me. I just gotta get these last hay bales loaded.”

Tristan nodded. “Well, I’m just putting Wildfire away. You want me to finish up for you so you have time together?”

Penny smiled. “That’d be real nice, Tristan. Thanks.”

He tipped his hat and winked at her. “Of course. Anything for my brother’s favorite girl.”

He dismounted from Wildfire and led the horse into the stables, handing him off to a stablehand rather than putting him away himself.

When he came back, I frowned. “Shouldn’t you be tending your horse?”

“No. Wildfire is learning to let others work with him. It’s important he trust more than just me. Otherwise we’ll have a repeat of what happened when he kicked Skye.”

He pulled on some work gloves and jutted his chin toward the stables. “I asked them to saddle up Teddy for you. Go on. I’ve got this.”

Approaching Penny, I patted Skye on the neck and let him nuzzle my face with his soft snout. “All right, Skye, I’ll bring you a treat.” Then I looked up at Penny, her braided hair falling over one shoulder, the setting sun creating a halo around her light cream cowboy hat. “Wait for me?”

She bit her lip and nodded.

In a few minutes, I was sitting astride Teddy and bringing him up next to Skye. “Where are we going, sugar?”

She winked. “I’ll race you to the pond.”

The pond. Where I hadn’t made my move. The place where she’d seen me naked as a jaybird and I’d recognized desire in her.
